Goshen David Miteu is an ambitious and forward-thinking Biomedical Scientist currently pursuing his Doctoral studies in Biomedical Science at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, United States, on a fully funded scholarship. He serves as a Graduate Research Assistant at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where his work centers on elucidating the molecular mechanisms that underlies HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) as well as therapeutic strategies to mitigate HAND and other neurocognitive disorders like Alzheimer and Parkinson Disease. He derives fulfilment knowing that his work as a Biomedical Scientist has an impact in the direction that the field is moving forward.
Goshen’s academic journey is marked by consistent excellence and purposeful ambition. He holds a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, where he was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Shared Scholarship. His master’s thesis: “Recombinant Protein Production and Purification of DDX3 (a Human RNA Helicase) from a Bacterial Expression System” explored microbial cell factories as model organisms for understanding disease mechanisms. During this period, he honed his proficiency in high-throughput recombinant DNA technologies and molecular biology techniques, laying the groundwork for his future research into disease modeling and therapeutic innovation.
His academic foundation was built at Caleb University, Lagos, Nigeria, where he graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Biochemistry as the overall best student and valedictorian of his cohort, achieving a CGPA of 4.90/5.00. It was during his National Youth Service in Ondo State, Nigeria, that Goshen’s drive for scientific impact was recognized with the I-Scholar Initiative Award and the EducationUSA Membership Award in 2021.
His commitment to excellence and scientific leadership has earned him membership in several esteemed professional organizations. He is a proud member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, which recognizes the top 15% of high-performing students worldwide. He also holds membership in the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, which acknowledges individuals actively engaged in experimental and biomedical research, and the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB). This demonstrates his continued engagement with the scientific community at home and abroad.
His research interests lie at the intersection of neuroscience, virology, and cellular biology, with crosstalks between viral pathogenesis and host cellular machinery. Goshen is passionate about using nascent technologies to drive the development of novel and personalized medicine to improve health outcomes.
Beyond the lab, Goshen is a collaborative leader and community advocate. He has co-authored and published multiple peer-reviewed articles aimed at combating infectious diseases and advancing the One Health approach. He is deeply intentional about building sustainable networks, often volunteering and partnering with fellow scientists and organisation across the globe to make a broader impact through both academic and community projects.
For Goshen, science is more than a career, it is a calling. He believes that unhealthy situations will not change if nothing is done about them, he affirms, a belief that fuels his resolve to contribute meaningfully to advance his field of endeavor through cutting-edge biomedical research.
